House blaze prompts renewed calls to control fireworks
By Andrew King THE CALL to ban fireworks for public sale is getting louder in the wake of a serious house fire in Harewood. Last week, Nor’West News revealed a firework was thrown on to the roof of a house in Becmead Drive on November 11, igniting material and spreading to the roof space. The family had just gone to bed Bruce Irvine when the smoke alarm in the kitchen alerted them to the danger. The father suffered burns to his feet before leaving the house. Police are still investigating the incident. Fire investigator Bruce Irvine said it was lucky no-one was killed as a result of the ‘idiotic act’. •Turn to page 4

Photographic collection reflects peninsula history By Sarla Donovan A 30-YEAR record of life on Banks Peninsula has been donated to the Akaroa Museum. Retired Redwood photographer Donald McKay recently gifted his entire collection of photographic negatives to the museum.
Museum collections manager Daniel Smith said the images were an important record of Banks Peninsula life covering the years from about 1950 through to the 80s, a period which was not well-represented in the museum’s existing collection. •Turn to page 10

from the editor’s desk WHAT A terrific fight Rose Williams (page 3) had put up against fast food giant Wendy’s. Her battle will see Wendy’s staff across New Zealand backpaid for owed days in lieu. Rose took her case Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment claiming Wendy’s were not honouring their lieu day committments. And she’s won. It will mean Wendy’s staff across the country will share in about $1.6 million in owed pay. Rose is no stranger to adversity – her husband Murray was killed in a speedway crash, and she’s had to work hard to keep her household going. Great stuff Rose. We’ve refreshed our masthead and page 2, and there’s more changes in the wind. I’ll keep to you posted. Barry Clarke

Fast food worker wins lieu day battle By Emily O’Connell A WOMAN has won a threeyear battle with a fast food company to ensure employees across the country get their days in lieu. Wendy’s, which has 23 outlets in New Zealand, including one in Hereford St and in Hornby, has breached two sections of the Holidays Act 2003. Wendy’s employee Rose Williams went to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment three years ago with the lieu day issue after she had been working at the Hornby restaurant for a year. Mrs Williams said Wendy’s staff were not being given a lieu day after working on a public holiday. She told Nor’West News it feels “pretty good” to win the case. Unite Union, of which Mrs Williams is a delegate, has estimated it would cost Wendy’s $1.6 million to pay back employees’ leiu days. MBIE senior labour inspector Kim Baldwin found Wendy’s breached section 56 and 60 of the Holidays Act. Section 56 says an alternative holiday must be provided to an employee who works on a

public holiday if that day would otherwise have been a working day for them. Section 60 sets out how those employees should be paid for the alternative holiday. Wendy’s has been ordered to comply with the two sections, conduct a review of its restaurants and keep records of staff contacted, rosters and leave. It has been ordered to give all past and present employees
from the Hornby and Dunedin restaurants their alternative holidays, or the equivalent pay since the restaurants were opened. Wendy’s has also been ordered to do the same for all other restaurants across the country backdated to July 1, 2012. Unite Union national secretary Gerard Hehir said it was “very happy” with the result. “We think it has significance

beyond our dispute with Wendy’s actually,” he said. Mr Hehir said it’s hard to establish what would be a person’s normal working day in hospitality because of their variable shift work. “The problem we have with Wendy’s is they said no-one was entitled to one [an alternative holiday] at all, because hours changed occasionally,” Mr Hehir said. He admired how tenacious Mrs Williams was throughout the trial. Mrs Williams left a job at Countdown to raise her son Josh after her husband Murray died in a speedway crash 14 years ago. She said her late husband was racing a sidecar at Ruapuna Speedway when he crashed and died instantly. She started working at Hornby Wendy’s four years ago. She said public holidays are the restaurant’s busiest days and it wasn’t fair to not get a day in lieu for working them. She plans to continue working at Wendy’s and has not encountered any problems while standing up for her rights. Wendy’s head office could not respond to Nor’West News before deadline yesterday.

Police target drivers outside St Albans School By Julia Evans A SERIES of police operations have been planned in a bid to change driver behaviour in St Albans. The ongoing problem of speed, dangerous driving and inappropriate parking has been compromising the safety of pupils at St Albans School around Westminster, Trafalgar and Cranford Sts. However, yesterday police and the city council started an “education and enforcement” programme to address the issues. The “CHAOS at the school gate” operation will target any reckless drivers or vehicles parked inappropriately outside the school. If any parking offences are discovered, enforcement officers will record the car registration and take photos of the offending vehicle. An infringement notice would then be posted to the vehicle’s owner. An increased police presence has already helped reduce incidents, deputy principal Claire Howison told Nor’West News, but it is a matter of addressing them over the long-term.

Edgeware pool project update Chairman of the St Albans Pavilion and Pool Group Paul Somerville gives an update about what is going on with the Edgeware pool project I am chairman of the St Albans pool group which represents the local community, the swim club, St Albans School and Edgeware businesses. We have recently reached some major milestones which has given the community a lot of encouragement and it has brought the vision of a new community pool closer to reality. In March this year we were granted the resource consent. This has been a lengthy process which we started prior to the earthquakes. To date this project has cost the group close to $90,000 raised solely by the local community. That doesn’t include pro bono services provided by various professionals. This process pretty well exhausted the funds raised by the community over the past eight years. We are now raising funds to cover administration costs and city council resource consent processing fees. At present we are covering these payments by donations from generous

members of the community and also from quiz nights at Bailies Bar and Restaurant, which is very supportive of the project. It has also been very encouraging to have city councillors and community board members, and our local MP Duncan Webb at the quiz nights. Our next step in the process was to negotiate the sale and purchase agreement to purchase 42a Edgeware Rd. With legal advice, some changes have been agreed on and the document is now ready to sign.
However, $6000 will need to be raised to cover subdivision costs. A generous grant of $20,000 has been given by the city council for the costing of the pool’s design and construction. We are working with Apollo Projects on this and will have estimates by Christmas. Apollo is looking at pool and building design options and we are confident it can give us the most efficient and cost-effective operation. Once we have these estimates and the title of the land we will be able start sourcing major funding. Regarding funding, originally there was quite a bit of publicity that Martin Coffey, a local businessman, was going to fund the building of the pool. However, this did not eventuate and Mr Coffey has since passed away.

Mr Irvine said it was time for a public debate. “We are not about banning people from an activity they enjoy. We just want to look at what changes can be made to give everybody a fair go,” he said. We asked readers if they though fireworks should be banned after a serious house fire in Harewood almost ended in deaths after a firework was thrown onto the roof. You responded

Debbie Pascoe – Good on you Bruce it is high time for a ban on the public sale of fireworks. Can we not involve multi-agencies across medicine, veterinary, firefighters as well as the public. The professionals at the ‘picking up the pieces’ end must hate it and sadly it isn’t confined to November 5, many people hoard them and let them off randomly. Pet owners cannot predict when they need to protect their animals, horses go through fences and have to be destroyed, the list goes on. The idiots may not be the majority of users but the carnage outweighs the benefits of the display. When lives are threatened a line has to be drawn. Public displays generally are far safer and that offers the public the chance to enjoy fireworks of a much better quality and at least we know it is only one weekend that has to be endured.

Heaton continues winning way By Andrew King HEATON Normal Intermediate girls have won the national primary school cricket shield for the third year in a row. Played in a Twenty20 format Heaton cruised to the title, winning all five games including a big 107-run victory over Carterton’s St Mary’s School in the opening round. As well as clocking up plenty of runs with the bat, they also proved to be lethal with the ball, bowling out Dunedin’s Balmacewen Intermediate for 31. They also beat Morrinsville

Mr McKay, 83, grew up on a farm in Le Bons Bay. An only child, he left the farm for three years to attend Christchurch Boys’ High School as a boarder, from 1947-49, where he joined the camera club. “We had some really really good instructors, including Len Casbolt and Frank McGregor. Also I used to spend a lot of time at my uncle Stan MacKay’s as he was the Christchurch Star Sun photographer and his son Ross was a skilled horse racing photographer. I used to admire their beautiful cameras and enlargers . . . I’m not sure what I liked more, the photography or the equipment.” Mr McKay sold his push bike and his best pair of shoes to buy a second hand camera from H.E. Perry in Colombo St. “I used that camera for two or three years, photographing various events, weddings, and children.” He shot his first wedding at 16, “local people.” Returning to Le Bons Bay in 1949, Mr McKay’s passion for photography was a frequent distraction
from farm work. He photographed aspects of farm life was well as local weddings, 21sts and other social events. In 1961, he was offered a job as medical photographer at Burwood Hospital, but continued to travel back to the peninsula in the weekends to photograph various events. The collection includes some interesting documentary records of peninsula life, Mr Smith said. “As a historical record the collection is extremely rich.” “He would photograph activities like docking at his farm in Le Bons Bay. There’s a whole series of images of sheep getting their tails chopped off; guys holding knives splattered with blood. It’s an interesting record of a lost way of life.” Fortunately Mr McKay still had his job books which record the content of the pictures. Local researcher Jan Shuttleworth had also already identified many subjects in the photographs by working through negatives digitised by Mr McKay. Nevertheless, cataloguing hundreds of negatives into the Akaroa Museum collection would be a “long process,” Mr Smith said. The museum plans to mount an exhibition towards the end of next year.

LAMB SALAD WITH BLACKBERRIES AND AVOCADO Ingredients 600g of lamb 1 serving oil spray 2 tsp dry mixed herbs 130g mesclun leaves, with herbs 16-20 blackberries 1 large avocado, halved, stoned and sliced ½ cup balsamic vinaigrette Directions Trim the lamb and snip the
edges, if required. This will prevent the lamb from curling during cooking. Spray with the oil. Combine the mixed herbs and black pepper and rub onto the lamb. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30min. Return to room temperature before cooking. Barbecue, grill or pan-fry for 3-6min each side, depending on thickness. Combine the salad greens, blackberries and avocado in a salad bowl. Thinly slice the lamb and toss with the salad and dressing.
HOW TO COOK LAMB LEG CHOPS ON THE BARBECUE Ingredients

1/4 cup white vinegar 2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 brown onion, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons olive oil 1kg lamb leg chops
Mix together the vinegar, salt, pepper, garlic, onion and olive oil in a large resealable bag until the salt has dissolved. Add lamb, toss until coated and marinate in refrigerator for two hours.
Preheat a barbecue or the grill to medium high. Remove lamb from the marinade and leave any onions that stick to the meat. Discard any remaining marinade. Cook chops for about 3-4min each side for medium or until cooked as desired.
